No browser extensions.
Hover on an image or video thumbnail and the full-size version appears right beside your cursor. In Finder, rest on a file to see its details, where it came from, and which apps are using it. HoverEnhance lives in your menu bar and works in the browser you already use, no extension needed. Free and open source.

Free app. Very spoiled dog.
I think this is pretty cool, but I don’t like charging for software. If you love this app and you have the means to help support my spoiled dog’s expensive diet with a donation, we would appreciate it greatly!
One-time, paid securely through Stripe right here. HoverEnhance stays free either way.
Scroll to zoom, then move around the image to look closer.
Everything, without the click.
Rest on a thumbnail or an image link and the full-size image appears beside your cursor. Albums from Reddit, X, Bluesky, and Instagram open at the photo you’re on, and clips from Reddit, X, Bluesky, Instagram, Streamable, and Imgur play right in the preview. YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, and Twitch play in their own players. Press Esc to close a preview, set a shortcut to pause them all, or skip the websites you’d rather it left alone.
Know a file before you open it.
Rest on a file or folder for its path, size, dates, where it came from, and which apps are using it, so you can finally eject that drive. Photos, songs, and videos show large, with what their own tags say: the camera and exposure, the artist and album, and when and with what a video was recorded. Click any detail to copy it.
Where a file came from, which apps have it open, and its path to copy.
The rest of the forecast.
Rest on Apple’s Weather item in the menu bar and the full forecast drops down under it: the next 24 hours, ten days, wind, humidity, pressure, UV, air quality, sun and moon, and alerts. It comes from Open-Meteo, free with no key, or from OpenWeatherMap, WeatherAPI.com, Tomorrow.io, Pirate Weather, or AccuWeather with your own key. AccuWeather adds pollen, the temperature in the shade, the change since yesterday, and a forecaster’s summary. Use your current location or search for a city, change any unit, and hide the parts you don’t need.
Signed and notarized, so it installs without warnings, and Sparkle keeps it up to date in place.
Sees what you point at. Nothing else.
-
Only what you hover
HoverEnhance reads the thing under your cursor, never what you type.
-
Only where you point
It contacts the sites behind what you hover, the weather service you choose, GitHub to check for updates, and Google only if you sign in to subscribe to YouTube channels.
-
Browsers by default
Links in other apps, like Mail, load nothing unless you allow it in Settings.
-
No surprise downloads
Images over 25 MB (adjustable) wait for you to click Load Anyway, and files only in iCloud stay there.
Latest Release
- Choose AccuWeather for the weather popup in Settings → Weather, with your own key, which needs a paid plan after a 14-day free trial.
- With AccuWeather, the weather popup shows today's pollen, how warm it feels in the shade, how today compares with yesterday, and a forecaster's summary of the days ahead.
- Turn the weather popup's pollen off in Settings → Weather.
- The weather popup's hourly forecast says how many hours it covers, as AccuWeather's covers 12.

This is a small, one-maintainer project, but I am responsive. I prefer that you use Github Issues for most support requests.
